Coke is very high in calories and regular consumption is sure to pile on the weight. The reason for this has to do with the metabolism of sugar.

The sugar in soft drinks is simple sugar fructose, which does not lower the hunger hormone ghrelin in the same way as glucose. When you consume glucose, the brain lowers ghrelin levels in your blood, so you know you have had enough and you stop eating or drinking. With fructose, the brain doesn’t get the message and you keep on drinking one glass after the other without ever feeling satisfied, piling on the empty calories and extra weight.
